Ofsted praises East Point Academy’s welcoming culture and improving teaching

Our school, in Lowestoft, has comfortably met the high standards that Ofsted has set, achieving the “Expected Standard” in all six measures under the new framework. Inspectors highlighted the culture, teaching and opportunities for our pupils in their report under the new framework.
The inspectors described the academy as “a kind, warm school” where pupils “are recognised as individuals”, “attend well and flourish”. As an acadmey we continue on an upward trajectory, with positives highlighted in our teaching, sense of belonging, and the opportunities available to our pupils.

This report, together with the exceptional GCSE results achieved by our pupils this summer, reflects the significant progress East Point Academy has made over the past 18 months. I am incredibly proud of everyone who has contributed to this journey and helped create a school that our community can be proud of, and where pupils can thrive both academically and personally.

We are proud to use a shared curriculum across Inspiration Trust which brings a knowledge-rich core to our teaching. Subject-specific knowledge is sequenced in a way that fosters connections between subjects, always building on our pupils' prior learning and supported by expert teaching.
Inspectors found that “pupils produce work of a high standard. Many write in depth, drawing together knowledge to produce well-reasoned arguments.” They also noted that “pupils are securing key knowledge in mathematics and English” which allows them to better access the rest of the curriculum. “Pupils work hard and produce high-quality work.” Following our summer of exceptional exam results, Ofsted’s comments reflect our upward trend in attainment. 74% of pupils achieved grades 9-4 in both English and maths – 54% were grades 9-5, well above national average figures.
Through a comprehensive programme of PSHE, our pupils better understand their community and respect others, both inside and outside of their social groups. Personal development opportunities benefit the wellbeing of our pupils, preparing them for their lives after they leave the academy. The inspectors commended the “popular Duke of Edinburgh’s award” as it “supports pupils to grow their self-belief, while making a positive contribution to their community”.
The report also recognised our positive environment, noting that pupils enjoy coming to school, socialising with their friends and taking pride in their surroundings. Inspectors found that pupils, including disadvantaged pupils, attend school well.
Supported by a strong pastoral care system, pupils make fantastic progress in their subjects and know who they can turn to if they have concerns or need extra support. Our staff work extremely hard to deliver a setting where pupils get the support they need, and for their hard work Ofsted found that “staff are proud to work at the school and trust. They feel valued.”
We will now continue to build on the progress recognised in the report as it continues to serve our families across Lowestoft and further afield.
