Our Approach to Teaching

Our Approach

We aim for the very best in our classrooms – and this starts with our Curriculum.  We believe in the power of knowledge and offer a knowledge rich curriculum approach for all our pupils ensuring they have access to a broad, high quality education.

With subject-specific knowledge at its heart, our curriculum is both inclusive and ambitious. Our teachers also draw on the latest evidence and research about what works in the classroom so our pupils can reach their full potential and achieve excellent outcomes. Where pupils have special educational needs, we also adapt our curriculum and teaching approaches to ensure all pupils can achieve and access the curriculum successfully.

The impact of this approach has been that pupils from East Point Academy regularly make well above average the national average for progress over their time at the academy

Alongside an academic, knowledge rich curriculum, we also aim to offer a wide variety of high quality enrichment opportunities, placing a high value on the arts, sports and cultural pursuits.

Independent Learning

At East Point Academy, we strive to provide the very best learning opportunities for all our students; therefore, we place great value in providing stimulating and purposeful independent learning activities, in class and at home.

Independent learning contributes greatly to the educational progress of your child. The ability to work independently is not only a life skill but is a crucial part of the learning process.

Subject teachers will regularly set your child short tasks to complete independently.  To make sure that the amount of work set is spread across the week, we have produced an independent learning timetable, which you can download below, identifying when independent learning tasks are due to be set.  This work will relate closely to your child’s current lesson content and helps them to practise and embed skills or to learn and recall specific subject knowledge.

Students are expected to record independent learning task instructions and deadlines in their planners in order to help organise their work and inform parents or carers of the tasks they are expected to complete.

Students should spend approximately 30 minutes on each subject. From time to time they may receive more than this. They should aim to read for at least 30 minutes per day, to supplement their reading at school, particularly if reading wasn't carried out at form time that day.

Parents and carers can support their child by monitoring tasks set and discussing family and other commitments in advance so students can meet deadlines and develop good habits in planning and preparation for independent learning.
